Default My first knife.

Hey guys.
I can't say that it's good by any stretch of imagination but I've seen worse first attempts.
To make things a bit different I'd like all of the flaws that are pointed out to include a hint or tip on how to avoid it in future.

I have to add that trying it only makes me respect the skills and patience you 'proper' makers must have

Please feel free to ask questions. I'm pretty pleased to have eventually finished it so I could talk about it for ages!
On with the (fast n dirty) pics!

That's really quite nice! Well done!

Personally I would thin the handle down a little more to give it a sleek, more elegant look. It's not a flaw, more a personal taste thing on my part.

You should definitely be pleased with yourself for making a great looking knife! I'm looking forward to seeing your next one. It can be addictive you know!!

Thanks dazcon.
The handle is indeed 'clunky'! I had hoped to make the transition from the bulge to the end much smoother but I started to see the pith showing and realised how restrictive the thin walled antler is.

On a positive note, it does feel a lot better than it looks as that sudden reduction is conveniently placed (by luck more than judgement) to wrap my pinky around!

cheers

Cheers lads. For about £7 in materials and maybe another £1.50 consumables I'm pretty chuffed. Of course the next one will be much better!!!

Thanks for the encouragement, Mike. No chance of stopping now - I'm hooked!
I have a full tang on the bench and another stick tang that I have plans for. Oh and SWMBO is buying me half a cows arse for my birthday soon so I can do sheaths for them all.
I do have a couple of question about stuff so new thread incoming!

You'll never forget your first...

Or your first knife

Still got my first, mind you still got a load of them made over the years....hardest thing is letting them go sometimes
