Thanks for the links fellas they look just the job i have the 12volt deben lamp at the mo with the dimmer its a great lamp but the battery on the belt gets in the way at times and a little weighty after a bit

the range on the P7 is pretty impressive for it's size, 711ft IIRC

Ive got a P7, very good well built torch, with a nice one-handed focus feature.

Decent Alkaline AAA's will work better for it as it takes 4x @ 1.5 each, 6v total. Using rechargables would drop that to 4.8v plus, rechargeables are lower capacity than Alkaline so you lose burn time. Alkalines last a VERY long time in the P7 I have found. Currently using AAA panasonic Evoltas.

CR lithium batteries some of the more compact torches use are nice, but are pretty costly.

LED Lenser do a few rechargeable variants in their range of torches but are on average about 30%+ more than a standard version of the same model.
