You might be able to correct a little by grinding the taper tang thinner and if you have any meat left to grind on the blade you might get a little there too.
I think this is a common problem with taper tangs and they are often ground after HT If you do your own HT there is a short window after quenching where the steel can be straightened without snapping. No use to you now I know. Stu Mitchell did straighten a blade by peening one side with a carbide tipped hammer, I think there is a thread about it somewhere. In theory it stretches the steel where you hit it so the steel bends away from the side you are hammering. I did try this (with a masonry chisel), it took ages and it did straighten the blade BUT when I ground out the hammer marks it went back to its original shape. With a fixed blade you might be able to hammer on the handle end so it doesnt show. Otherwise, I dont think there is much you can do. I would e-mail Stu, he is usually very helpful. |
