Default Heat Treatment for Various Steels

Lots of interest in this subject lately so here's O-1 Tool Carbon Steel to start it off!
If there's enough interest I'll follow it with A2, D2, 440C etc..


Heat Treating Specifications for O-1 Tool Steel


Hardening Temperature Preheat @ 1200 deg F
Harden @ 1450 1500 deg F
Quenching medium Oil
Hardness as quenched 64 65 Rc
Tempered Hardness 58 62 Rc
Forging Temperature 1700 1900 deg F
Annealing Temperature 1400 1500 deg F
Tempering Temperature 300 475 deg F

Heat Treating Specifications for D2 Tool Steel


Hardening Temperature 1800 – 1875 F
Soak 20 min
DON’T OVERHEAT
Quenching medium Air
Hardness as quenched 63 – 64 Rc
Tempered Hardness 59 – 61 Rc
Forging Temperature 1800 – 2000 deg F
Annealing Temperature 1550 – 1600 deg F. cool @ 20 deg per hour
Tempering Temperature 450 g F = 59Rc

ok how long do I hold at temp for say 3mm,4mm ,5mm on O1
